Bali fabrics and Javanese fabrics, Batik fabrics from Indonesia
100% Cotton batik quilting fabrics, expertly painted and dyed brilliant hues and combinations. Traditional batik art goes back thousand of years in the Javanese culture. Our selection of fabrics are certainly more modern than ancient style batiks, incorporating bright colors in every hue of the rainbow, and designs based on popular culture, floral motifs and even modern art style. The artisans in Java and Bali, Indonesia that create these amazing fabrics begin with a base color, applied by hand and then with a copper chop the artisan will hand stamp the design in wax. The fabric is then dyed again, creating layers of color and design. Finally the wax is boiled off, leaving layers of color and design for your use and pleasure. Imagine the possibilities! Quilting or garments, curtains or throw pillows these batiks will fill your life with color.
The batik process is a multi step method by which copper CAPS (pronounced "chops") are shaped into designs using flat copper sheeting and then affixed to a wood block. The fabric is dyed, or kept white if that is the underlying design color, and the CAP is dipped in hot wax. The artist then stamps the wax design onto the fabric creating a resist affect. The fabric is then dyed again with a darker color. At this point more wax can be applied with the same or a different CAP design, creating another resist so that an additional dye bath will cover remaining unwaxed parts. The wax is then removed, resulting in layers of colors and designs.
